Ten years of war (1991 – 2001)
had a tremendous impact on Sierra Leone’s already struggling educational system.
Sierra Leone’s primary education rates are amongst the lowest in the world.
- Only 40% of the teachers are trained and qualified.
- Teachers need encouraged. The average student to teacher ratio is 50 to 1.
- The most common method of classroom management is carrying and using a stick on students.
- Their teaching methods focus only on cognitive education, neglecting development of the whole child, including spiritual, social, emotional, and physical development.
- Less than 10% of the population is Christian •60% Muslim •30% Indigenous beliefs
- Increasing Number of Muslim Schools and Mosques Developing Ahmadiyya Movement:
- Under the Nusrat Jehan Scheme supported by Sierra Leones’ president Aljaja Dr. Ahmad Tejan Kabbah -160 Primary Schools -26 Secondary Schools -Over 1,000 Mosques
